The artichoke is a perennial thistle originating around the Mediterranean area. Artichokes can grown up to 2 metres tall, with arching, deeply lobed leaves. The flowers themselves develop in a large head from an edible bud. Artichokes can be produced from seeds as annuals, producing a limited harvest at the end of the first growing season.

There are a number of artichoke varieties to choose from. Some of the most common include:

Green globe artichoke seeds - Thick fleshy scales from large buds
Chinese artichoke tubers -
Crisp and crunchy with a nutty taste
Common Jerusalem artichoke - Knobbly with pale purple skin

Growing artichokes

1. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil.

2. Improve the soil by adding manure and sprinkle general fertiliser granules over the soil before planting.

3. Dig a hole slightly bigger than the plant itself.

4. Make sure the soil mark on the stem is level with the surface of the soil.

5. ill with soil until firm and water well.

6. Trim off any buds in the first year, so the plant has time to establish itself.

7. Harvest the artichoke from the second year.

When growing artichokes always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
