Basil is a herb from the family ‘Lamiaceae’ playing a big role in both Mediterraean cuisine as well as S E Asion food. Basil leaves have a very strong taste (similar to anise) and pungent smell. Basil can grow up to 130 cm’s high tall with big white flowers.
Basil is best grown in hot, dry conditions and does not like the cold, behaving like an annual plant if there is a frost. Basil can be grown indoors in a pot and enjoys being in strong sunshine. Basil can be propagated very reliably from cuttings with the stems of cuttings suspended for a fortnight in water until the roots develop.
There are numerous varieties of basil available to grow including sweet basil, lemon basil and holy basil. Some of the more common basil seeds you can find include:
Genovese basil seeds – Taller plant with large leaves, great for salads.
Lime basil seeds - Lime scented green leaves. Can be eaten raw or used in tea.
Magical Michael basil seeds – Produces an ornamental basil with tasty aromatic leaves.
Mediterranean Medley basil seeds – Great tasting basil whose leaves can be dried and frozen.
Red basil seeds - Deep purple leaves useful in a wide range of dishes.
Siam Queen basil seeds - Purple stems and green leaves with a great aroma.

Growing basil
1/ When choosing the growing site you need to remember that basil needs sunshine. Soil should be well dug and well-drained.
2/ You should sow three basil seeds in a small pot with compost in April keeping the temperature at a constant, never letting it fall below 10C. After a fortnight the basil seedlings will appear.
3/ Plant the basil where there is plenty of sun. Try to not get water on its leaves.
4/ When harvesting basil cut the leaves off as and when required, but always from the top.
When planting basil always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
