The garden beet aka beetroot is one of the many cultivated varieties of beets in the world and arguably the most commonly encountered beet in Britain. The deep red roots of beet root are eaten boiled and can be used hot or cold.
Beetroot offers a number of different variety seeds to choose from including Boltary seeds which can be sown early in the year, Cylindra seeds which product a long, cylindrical beet, Detroit seeds which produce a uniform globe shape and Kestrel seeds which produces high quality smooth round beets.

Growing beetroot
1. First prepare the soil for sowing raking to leave a fine finish.
2.
So the beetroot seeds directly into the soil from April - July.
3.
Make a 2 cm hole with a cane and drop in two seeds every 10 cms. Cover then water.
4.
Thin out seedlings when 2 cms tall, leaving one every 10 cms.
5.
Water well.
6.
Harvest beets 90 days after sowing. The beets should be around the size of a golf ball.
When planting beetroot always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
