Broad Beans are a species of bean native to north Africa and southwest Asia, and extensively cultivated around the world. Broad beans are among the most ancient plants to be cultivated becoming part of the Mediterranean diet around 6000 BC. Broad beans are eaten while still young and tender, enabling harvesting to begin as early as the middle of spring. Broad beans need around 6ml of water a day to grow at optimal rate.
There are a large variety of broad beans that can be grown. Some of the most common types of broad bean seeds include:
Aquadulce Claudia broad bean seeds - A very robust long pod variety which is tough enough to survive Winter.
Bunyard broad bean seeds – All round strong performing broad beans producing 8-9 beans per pod.
Masterpiece Green Longpod broad bean seeds – Produces attractive green beans when picked young.
Optica broad bean seeds – Award winnng broad bean that tends grow lower than other broad beans. Yielding around 5 or 6 white beans per pod.
Red Epicure broad bean seeds – These striking looking broad beans taste fantastic.
Sutton broad bean seeds - The Sutton is suitable for spring or autumn sowing and ideal for small to medium gardens.

Growing broad beans
1. Start by digging over and adding leaf mould to the site.
2. Choose the broad bean variety you require (check above for the types of broad beans)
3. Sow a single bean seed direct into the soil 5 cm deep. Keep them at least 23 cms apart.
4. Support with sticks and string when seedlings appear.
5. When the pods start to emerge pinch out the growing tip with two leaves attached.
6. Broad beans should be harvested on regular basis from the bottom up.
When planting broad beans always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
