# Broccoli recipes

Broccoli is a plant of the cabbage family. By nature it possesses large fleshy, flower heads, usually green (sometimes purple) in color and surrounded by leaves.

Broccoli tends to be a cool-weather crop and grows best when exposed to an average temp of 65 - 75 degrees F. Broccoli's popularity has increased due to its high vitamin C and soluble fibre content.

There are a variety of broccoli seeds you can buy including:

Purple sprouting broccoli seeds - This is a robust, high yielding variety producing purple spears.
White sprouting broccoli seeds - Creamy white spears with a mild flavour.
Sprouting Rudolph broccoli seeds - Large, tasty heads can be picked from October-December.
Green Magic broccoli seeds - Tightly packed green heads, top flavour.
Ironman broccoli seeds - A very commercial variety with a superb quality and great flavour

Tips for growing broccoli:

1. The soil you have makes a big difference yto your broccoli growing. Ideally Purple Sprouting Broccoli should have a rich, heavy soil. Broccoli plants are going to be in the ground for around 40 weeks thus the ground should not be waterlogged.

2. Make a seed bed. Rake in early Spring and cover with compost. The area should ideally be sunny.

3. Mark out the rows using string. Rows should be 15 cms apart. Sow the broccoli seed thinly.

4. When the growing Broccoli plants get to around 2.5cms tall, thin the seedlings to about 7 cms apart in the rows to avoid overcrowding thus causing the seedlings.

5. The seedlings are ready to plant out when they are about between 10 - 15 cms tall.

6. Remember to water regularly and apply mulch from time to time
.
