# Growing/ planting chives
# Chive recipes
Chives are the smallest species of the onion family ‘Alliaceae’ and native to Europe, Asia and North America. Chives tend to be used as a condiment and grown both for their culinary and aesthetic look.
When growing chives make sure the soil is rich in organic matter and well-drained. You can grow chives from seed and they will mature in the Summer.
There are two main chive varieties you can choose from. Some of the most common chive seeds include “garlic” chive seeds which are good in salads with a mild garlic flavour and “Standard” chive seeds which are onion flavoured with spear-like green leaves.

Growing chives
1/ Chives are one of the easiest herbs to grow and take up little space in the garden.
2/ Chives aren’t too fussy about the type of soil and can grew just as easily in direct or partia sunshine.
3/ When growing chive seeds scatter over a bed, covering with soil and after just two weeks seedlings will appear.
4/ Once established, chives will form small bulbs which can be replanted and transferred elsewhere around the garden.
5/ When harvesting chives cut with scissors as and when needed try to leave 5 cm’s of leaves to continue growing.
When planting chives always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
