# Growing/ planting coriander
# Coriander recipes
Coriander is an annual herb from the family ‘Apiaceae’ native to SW Asia. The coriander plant can grow up to 50 cm’s high with leaves that are lobed at the base of the plant and feathery on higher up on the stems.
When it comes to culinary use both the coriander seeds and the leaves of the plant can be consumed both of which offer different flavours. The seeds can tend to be slightly lemony whilst the leaves can come across as rather bitter.
There are a few coriander varieties you can choose to grow. Some of the most common coriander seeds include: “Fine Leave” coriander seeds great in Indian dishes or in salads, “Confetti” coriander seeds that produce tasty fern-like leaves, “Lemon” coriander seeds which have an unusual lemon fragrance and flavour and “Standard” coriander seeds.

Growing coriander
1/ Coriander can be quite a fussy old herb. It likes sunshine but also requires a bit of shade and can ‘flower’ if it gets stressed.
2/ It’s best to grow coriander directly by planting the seed in soil. Make sure you prepare the site properly.
3/ Coriander seeds can take up to 3 weeks to germinate. Thin young coriander plants to 20 cm’s. Make sure they receive regular watering.
4/ When harvesting coriander make sure the plant is big enough to survive having its leaves plucked. You can use both leaf and stem in cooking.
When planting coriander always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
