The cucumber comes from the family ‘Cucurbitaceae’ which includes squash. The cucumber itself is a creeping vine that roots in the ground and grows up frames. It has large leaves that form a canopy over the fruit. On the whole cucumbers are cylindrical with tapered ends however their shape can vary according to variety.

There are a number of cucumber varieties to choose from. Some of the most common cucumber seeds include:

Baribal cucumber seeds – Short, dark green fruit.
Bella cucumber seeds – A robust cucumber with resistance to powdery mildew.
Burpless tasty green cucumber seeds - Recommended by the Institute of Agricultural Botany.
Eden project cucumber seeds – A round cucumber ... whatever next!
Long green ridge cucumber seeds - Produces a heavy crop of medium-length fruit
Market more seeds - Long dark green fruits. Great with any salad.

Growing cucumbers

1/ During mid-Spring sow two seeds on their sides, 2 cm’s deep, in a 7.5cm pot filled with seed compost. Cover the cucumber seeds and water.

2/ Once germinated provide support with garden cane.

3/ Around May, plant cucumber plants into a growing bag (two per bag) include a cane.

4/ Keep plants well-watered and tie regularly to the canes with twine.

5/ Once cucumber fruits appear add a liquid fertiliser every two weeks.

6/ Harvest cucumbers in the Summer.
