# Growing/ planting leeks
# Leek recipes
The leek is a vegetable belonging to the Alliaceae family. The edible part of the leek is the bundle of leafs sometimes called its stem. Leeks tend to fall into two categories when growing them 1) “Summer leeks” intended for harvest in the season they were planted, and 2) “Over Wintering” leeks which should be harvested in the Spring of the following year.
There are a few leek varieties to grow some of the most common leek seeds include the “Edison” seed producing small, tender leeks, the “Musselburgh” seed which is a hardy, reliable producer, the “Oarsman” seed which produces smooth white shanks and the “Giant Albana” seed which produces high-yield, flavoursome leeks.

Growing leeks
1/ Choose a sunny, sheltered site adding manure.
2/ Leek seeds should be sown in rows approx 30 cm’s apart. Continue to remove weeds from the surrounding area.
3/ When seedlings have three leaves each, thin out, leaving one plant every 15 cm’s.
4/ Water plants on a regular basis.
When planting leeks always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
