Mint  is a genus of many species of flowering plants belonging to the family ‘Lamiaceae’. It tends to be a perennial herb. Leafs are arranged in opposite pairsThey have wide-spreading underground rhizomes and erect, branched stems. The leaves are arranged in opposite pairs and their colours range from dark green to purple.

Mint grows best in moist environments with partial shade and mint plants can grow up to 1.2 metres tall. They are one of the fastest growing herbs and need regular maintenance to control growth.  There are a number of different mint varieties including peppermint and spearmint.

Growing mint

1/ Mint is one of the easiest herbs to grow from seed or plant. They are not so fussy as other herbs but do prefer a moist and fertile soil.

2/ You can propagate mint from its roots. Take a piece of root, pot it in a container and water regularly. After a few weeks leaves will sprout and the plant can be transplanted into the garden.

3/ You can grow mint in containers. Simply place in potting compost and water frequently.

4/ Mint is a very strong grower and thus needs to be maintained appropriately.

5/ When harvesting mint cut the leaves using scissors. Cut from the top of the plant.

When planting mint always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
