# Onion recipes

An onion is a term used for plants in the genus Allium. Onions can be grown from seed or from sets started from seed the previous year. Most traditional European onions are "long-day" onions, producing bulbs only after 15+ hours of daylight occur. There are “short-day” onions which can be planted mid-Winter and produces bulbs in the early Spring.

There is an abundance of onion varieties you can choose to grow. Some of the most common onion seeds include:

Ailsa Craig onion seeds – Large globe-shaped onion with a mild flavour.
Bedforshire Champion onion seeds – A solid, reliable onion with round bulb.
Deep Purple onion seeds – Large bulbed spring onions with a deep purple colour.
Gaurdsman onion seeds – Straight, uniform spring onions.
Hytech onion seeds - Uniform, brown-skinned onion. Keeps well.
Red Barron onion seeds – An intense colour with a great taste.
Senshyu onion seeds – Great flavour onion recommended by the NIAB.
Shimonita onion seeds – Japanese spring onion. Nice and sweet.
Silverskin onion seeds – Produce fantastic tiny pickled onions.
White Lisbon onion seeds – these spring onions are ideal in a salad. Can be sown in October.

Growing onions

1/ You can choose to grow onions from seeds, transplants, or sets. Each option has its advantages. For beginners growing onions from sets is the easiest method however choice is limited.

2/ Onions seeds can be started indoors and set in soil as. Direct-seeding is impractical in most home gardens.

3/ Onions like cool Spring weather and are best grown in raised beds about 10 cm’s high. Regular watering is necessary.

4/ Onions sets should be planted around three weeks before the last frost and spaced around 10 -15 cm’s apart. If you are planting onions from the seed then wait until the soil is at least 10c.

Onions aren't the simplest vegetable to grow so always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
