# Growing/ planting oregano

# Oregano recipes

Oregano is a perennial herb from the species ‘Origanum’ native to Europe and central Asia. Oregano can grow up to 80 cm’s tall with opposite leaves and purple flowers. Oregano prefers a well-drained site with lots of sunshine.  However oregano does not require many nutrients and will grow in  a variety of soils.

There are a number of varieties of oregano seeds including “Standard” oregano seeds, “Greek” oregano seeds which have a great pesto flavour and “Country Cream” oregano seeds which have cream and green leaves and strong taste.

Vegetable-seeds have found the following seed vendors who sell oregano seeds.

Growing oregano

1/ As a Mediterranean herb oregano grows best when in direct sunlight and where there is well-drained, fertile soil.

2/ When growing oregano make sure the herb does not dry out however do not allow the soil to become water-logged. If you choose to grow oregano in a container sow the oregano seeds in March in a small pot then transplant into a 30 cm pot during May.

3/ The leaves of oregano should be harvested during July or just before the flowers appear.

When planting oregano always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
