# Radish recipes

The radish is an edible root vegetable belonging to the family ‘Brassicaceae’. Radishes come in a number of varieties, varying in size and colour. Summer radishes tend to mature rapidly reaching maturity in three to four weeks. Tilling the soil helps the radish seeds grow.

There are a number of different radish varieties. Some of the more common radish seeds include:

Daikon Speedy radish seeds
- Crunchy and nutritious with a pleasant peppery taste.
French Breakfast radish seeds – One of the fastest growing radishes. Crisp flavour.
German Salad radish seeds - Attractive rosy-red radishes. Great with salads.
Jolly Speedy radish seeds – As the name implies, ready to eat within 6 to 12 weeks.
Mantanghong radish seeds - British bred with sweet, slightly nutty taste.
Mino Summer radish seeds - Long, tapering, smooth-skinned white radishes.
Mooli April radish seeds - This Japanese radish has very long roots. Good flavour.
Purple plum radish seeds – Bright purple skin with white flesh.
Saxa radish seeds - An early variety radish producing flavoursome round, red roots.
Sparkler 3 radish seeds - Medium-sized radish recommended by the NIAB.

Growing radishes

1/ Radishes are one of the easiest vegetables to grow and require almost no attention once past the seedling stage.

2/ Choose a sunny site.Radishes must be watered regularly, there’s no need to add extra fertiliser to radishes.

3/ Use nettings to protect against hungry birds.

4/ Harvest radishes when they are crisp and young, typically this occurs around five weeks after sowing. Large Winter radishes can however take 3 to 4 months to mature.

When planting radishes always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
