Spinach is a flowering plant belonging to the family ‘Amaranthaceae’ and native to central Asia. Spinach is a hardy annual plant growing up to a height of 30 cm’s. There are three basic types of spinach 1) ‘Savoy’ spinach which has dark green, crinkly leaves, 2) ‘Flat/smooth leaf’ spinach which has broad smooth leaves and 3) ‘Semi-savoy’ spinach which is a hybrid variety with slightly crinkled leaves.
There are a number of spinach varieties you can choose to grow. Some of the more common spinach seed types include:
Beet Popeye spinach seeds – Produces dark green, heavily ‘savoyed’ leaves.
Bloomsdale spinach seeds - An easy to grow spinach with flavoursome leaves.
Bordeaux spinach seeds - Unique shaped leaves specifically bred for baby leaves.
Scenic spinach seeds - Full Downy Mildew resistance and high nutrient content.
Tarpy spinach seeds - Organic seeds with medium dark green leaves.
Tetona Speedy spinach seeds - Produces crispy, sweet tasting leaves. Ready to eat in just 6-12 weeks.
Tirza spinach seeds – Can be as baby leaves or left to mature. Good resistance to mildew.
Toscane spinach seeds - Very high yielding and robust spinach with dark green leaves.

Growing spinach
1/ Soil should be prepared for sowing spinach through digging and adding manure.
2/ Dig a trench 2.5 cm’ deep with a garden cane and sow the spinach seeds 8 cm’s apart from each other. Cover and water seeds.
3/ When spinach seedlings are 2 cm’s tall, thin to leave a plant every 30 cm’s.
4/ Maintenance is required through the removal of weeds and regular watering.
5/ When harvesting spinach remove leaves as required from the outside of the spinach plant.
When planting spinach always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
