Sweetcorn also spelt sweet corn is a variety of maize with a high sugar content. Unlike other field corn varieties, which are harvested when the kernels are dry, sweetcorn is picked when immature and eaten as a vegetable, rather than a grain. When it comes to growing sweetcorn make sure you test the soil the closer to 6 - 6.5 pH the better.
There are a number of different sweetcorn varieties you can choose to grow. Some of the most common sweetcorn seeds include “Lark” seeds which produce sweet and juicy kernels, “Applause” seeds bred to retain its sweetness for a longer period, “Minipop” seeds which produce baby corns, “Sundance” seeds considered the best for British Summers and “Swift” seeds which has 2-3 times the sugar levels of ordinary sweetcorns.

Growing sweetcorn
1/ Sow two sweetcorn seeds in April. Water and put on a windowsill.
2/ A couple of weeks before planting put sweetcorn plants in a shady place outdoors to acclimatise.
3/ Prepare the site by raking, removing stones and adding a general fertiliser.
4/ Ideally plant in blocks during May leaving 60 cm’s between rows.
5/ Continue to water and keep site weed free.
When planting sweetcorn always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
