Thyme is a perennial common herb belonging to the plant genus Thymus. The thyme plant sprouts foliage and flowers and can grow up to 30 cm’s high. There are a few thyme varieties you can choose to grow. Some of the more common thyme seeds include "golden-scented" thyme seeds and "ground cover" thyme seeds.

Growing thyme

1/ Thyme is not a particularly difficult herb to grow however it’s advised to have well-drained soil in a partially shaded position.

2/ If you are growing thyme from a seed then the thyme seeds should be sown in small pots containing potting compost. Within a week seedlings should appear and that’s when you should thin to 2-3 seedlings, keep the compost moist.

3/ Following the first sign of leaves take into the garden to harden off.

4/ Once thyme has established itself it requires little maintenance. Try to avoid over watering and over feeding.

5/ Try and harvest thyme during June and July when it has the best taste.

When planting thyme always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
