# Growing/ planting turnip seeds
# Turnip recipes
The turnip is a root vegetable commonly grown in temperate climates. The most common type of turnip tends to be white skinned with a white flesh. The leaves from turnips can be eaten resembling mustard greens in flavour. Turnips tend to be sown from the beginning to the end of June however it has been known to sow as early as May.
There are a number of different varieties of turnips. Some of the most common turnip seed types include the “Rubin” seed which is a quick cropping turnip with great flavour, “Snowball” seeds which produce a turnip with pure white flesh, “Atlantic Speedy” seeds which are quick maturing with ready to eat turnips in just 6-12 weeks, “Golden ball” seeds which produce dwarf, compact plants and a yellow flesh and “Top Milan” seeds which produce white turnips with a purple crown.

Growing turnips
1/ Turnips should be grown in fertile soil that’s firm yet free draining.
2/ Turnips tend to like sunny sites with some cover from high winds/ frosts.
3/ Turnips can be sown from March through to August. Ideally main-crop turnips should be sown in July/ August.
4/ Sow the small seeds in rows that are approximately ten inches apart. General maintenance ie weeding is required.
5/ Early turnip varieties should be harvested from May.
6/ The secret to growing great turnips is to harvest them while they are still small. Leaving turnips to grow too large is the main reason why they become woody.
When planting turnips always remember to refer to the instructions on the seed packets!
